My family has had poultry off and on for years, but in 2010, I decided to put the land we live on to good use and start a hobby farm. With the goal of being at least a little more self-sufficient, I began with just a few chickens and goats. It has steadily grown since then to also include the beginnings of a small orchard (Washington Navel Oranges, Okitsu Satsuma, Lisbon Lemon, Lakeland Limequats, Arctic Kiwi, Banana, Brown Turkey and Ischia Figs, Flordaqueen Peach, Wonderful Pomegranate, Rabbiteye Blueberries [Becky Blue, Powderblue, & Premiere], Loganberries, and Strawberries), as well as, the Scuppernong vine that my grandfather planted years ago and our two lovable donkeys, Myrtle and Mose.
The more I became involved in poultry, the more we realized that there are so many different breeds that I was in love with and that, unfortunately, some of those breeds are quickly disappearing. The ultimate goal of this farm is to help with the preservation of some of the rare and heritage breeds of poultry. To learn more about some of those breeds, you can visit the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
In addition to the farm animals, I also have two senior citizen Weimaraners named Hunter and Remy, and a standard poodle named Bryony.
MHF is located in the Wiregrass Area outside scenic Elba, Alabama (Small Town, Big Heart) on 6 acres of land. It's not a lot of land, but it's my own little slice of Heaven on Earth.
Enjoy looking around this site, and if you have any questions just ask.
Thank you,
Shell
